Can I finance a car that was previously written off?

Cars that have been written off are usually the result of an accident where the car has so much damage it is deemed unsafe to drive, or alternatively the damage caused will cost more to fix than the car is worth and therefore will be written off by the insurance company.

Cars are provided with a write-off category which are ranked on the amount of damage caused. Prior to October 2017, these categories were A, B, C & D with A being the worst through to D being the least severe. However after a review, the ABI changed the categories to A, B, S & N. For more information on the categories please visit our car write-off article.

Unfortunately, the lenders Zuto work with do not offer finance for vehicles which have previously been written off. This is due a to greater potential risk of complications with the vehicle further down the line, and is also for your own protection to ensure that you aren’t left with finance on a vehicle that has problems.

We’d recommend you avoid cars which have been written off if looking for finance. For alternative vehicle options, Zuto have thousands of vehicles across the whole UK available in your online account area. We’ve ensured these are all stocked with our trusted dealers and are good quality vehicles. You can browse and search our range of vehicles  in your ‘My Zuto’ account after your application has been submitted.

Search thousands of cars available with our approved dealers once you've applied and been approved for car finance.
