Pre-application Support

Can I apply for car finance with a provisional licence?

If you have a car in mind, but you’ve not passed your test yet, we can still try to help find a car finance option for you. How much you can borrow will depend on your personal circumstances.

The good news is we have some Lenders on our panel who’ll accept drivers with a provisional licence. However, as most provisional drivers are usually quite young, it’s often not the status of their licence that can cause an issue, it’s their lack of credit history. This can lead to applications for finance being rejected.

Zuto work with Lenders who specialise in car finance for people with lower credit scores so we might still be able to help. If you find yourself having a lower than average credit score, there are ways you can improve it which will help increase the chance of you being approved for finance.

  • Make sure you’re on the electoral roll
  • If possible, try to use a form of credit, little and often, ensuring you’re paying the balance on time each month.
  • Pay any bills you have on time
  • Avoid applying for multiple credit applications in a short space of time

One way to tackle both provisional licence and no credit history issues is to make a joint application with someone who has a good credit score and a full UK driving licence. This can be anyone willing to make the payments if you’re unable to.
